Is there anything you should be aware of before jumping in? During summer and autumn you need to be aware of active algal blooms before letting your dog loose near the water. Algal bloom and dogs is an unfortunate mix as it can cause algae poisoning in dogs.
ALGAE POSIONING IN DOGS
When algae blooms, toxins are released that can cause a type of poisoning in dogs. These toxins can affect the nervous system or the liver, which in turn can affect breathing, movement and the internal organs. Algae poisoning can, unfortunately, lead to a dog dying. The algae is present in both lakes and sea. A sheen of blue-green, green or yellow-green coating develops on the water when the algae blooms. The toxins may remain in the water for several days after the algae has disappeared, so extra care must be taken when you release your pets near water. So, during the algae bloom period, keep a close eye on your dog and carefully observe the water before going for a swim.
